W.T Copeland (& Sons Ltd), Spode Works, Stoke, Staffordshire Potteries, was established in 1847 and remains to the present. Formerly Copeland & Garrett.

This beautiful plate in the "Kew" pattern was introduced in 1882. The pattern was produced as a plain print on both earthenware and bone china. A plain print is a pattern produced in one color. The design was also produced in several different hand-colored, polychrome versions.

The pattern was named after the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew, near Richmond, London. The design, with a border of chrysanthemum blooms and geometric style panels around a central stylized floral arrangement in a large vase, with a fence and additional floral in the background. This is the Aesthetic style which became very popular in the 1870s and 1880s and was inspired by Japanese design.

The plate measures 9 3/4" across and carries an impressed mark of a crown and "Copeland". This marking was used on earthenware from 1847 in the early twentieth century. There are no cracks, chips or repairs. A lovely pattern and gorgeous color.
