A wonderful hand painted game plate with rare subject of Sea Gulls as a motif. The motif consists of a naturalistic scene of two sea gulls in flight over the ocean with sea-side bluff in the distance as well as several small sail boats and more hovering gulls against a sun-setting sky. The exceptionally detailed gulls are portrayed in shades of gray, white, black and deep orange, gently gliding over an ocean of blue-green and white caps. The sun-setting sky is ablaze in bands of burnt orange, yellow and blue. The scalloped rococo border is heavy gold gilt.
The plate was decorated by the Lazeyras, Rosenfeld and Lehman decorating factory in France, circa 1920. The plate carries their back-stamp, Mark #3, in green "Hand Painted - over a crown - over L.R.L. - Limoges France". It also has the back-stamp of "Limoges - over a crescent - over France", a company for which there is no background information available. The plate measures 10 5/8" across, is factory drilled for hanging on the wall and artist signed. The plate does have a condition issue, one of the points on the edge has been broken, which would be professionally repaired if desired. There are no other cracks, chips or repairs; some minor gold wear. A beautiful plate executed with a rare subject.
