Barbotine is the French term for ceramic slip or a mixture of clay and water for moulding or decorating pottery. This technique was used to create applied adornments on 19th century majolica items.

This lovely barbotine majolica basket, circa 1890, is of European origin. The exterior is deep cobalt blue impressed rosette pattern with a smooth soft pink interior and pastel yellow arched handle. It rests on four small feet. A large deep red applied rose and rose bud with applied shaded green leaves and stems adorn one side of the basket. The other side has a has a large yellow applied rose with applied shaded green leaves and stems. The pastel yellow base has an under-glaze marking resembling a dollar sign symbol and the number "45". The basket measures 10" in length, 5 1/2" in width and 6" in height. There are no cracks or repairs; one leaf has a small chip and there are several minute nicks on the edges of the flowers pedals. A beautifully decorated basket in vivid colors.
