The fine art of hand-decorated porcelain by professional studios reached its zenith in the late 1800's and early 1900's. In 1912 there were 49 decorating studios in Chicago and by 1916 the number grew to 102. The best know were Pickard, Stouffer, Bauer & Donath to name a few.
Howard B Reury was born in New York in 1870 and by 1903 was an established artist with the Pickard Studio in Chicago. Records show he worked for Pickard from 1903-1912 as well as being associated with the studios of Pitkin & Brooks and Wright. During the period of 1915-1916 he operated his own private studio. I feel it was during this period that this fantastic "Poppies" lemonade set and tray was produced. It resembles the poppy patterns created by Pickard, but not exactly.
The motif consists of pairs and single orange poppy flowers with blue and black centers, trailing buds and green leaves outlined and highlighted in gold. The flowers are set against a wide gold band with narrow black bands. Rims and handles are also decorated with gold. Each piece is signed "Reury". The set is comprised of a round tray measuring 12 1/2" across and stamped "Bavaria"; cider pitcher measuring 7" in height and 9" from spout-to-handle and stamped "Bavaria" and five cider cups measuring 3 3/4" in height and 2 3/4" across and stamped "Limoges W.C.& Co. France" which is the William Guerin Porcelain Company. I have the sixth cup which has a broken handle. It has a clean break and can be reattached professionally or at home; it will be included with the set. The set pictured has are no cracks, chips, or repairs; the gold is in excellent condition as is the decoration. There are a few minor marks from being very gently used. This is a outstanding set in so many ways and cross-over collecting attributes.
