The original company formed in 1904 rose to prominence for its exquisite, Dresden-type figurines and hand-painted birds, vases and an assortment of household items. Started by a group of salesmen who were interested in the business of reselling porcelain products. In 1937, Fritz Gerold, was appointed company head and earned world-wide recognition. During the 1960's, Gerold died, and the company began to have severe problems resulting in bankruptcy.
This adorable porcelain figure of a sparrow/finch, circa 1960's, is hand-painted in muted shades of gray, tan and black. It stands 3 3/8" in height and is stamped in green "Gerold Porzellan Bavaria" and impressed "4964". This mark was introduced for export into the Communist countries after 1961. There are no cracks, chips or repairs.
