Most well decorated Victorian parlors of the late 1800's and early 1900's had a piano draped with shawls. Something decorative was needed to hold those fabrics in place and from necessity the piano baby was born. Heubach Brothers, a German company, was founded by Georg Christoph and Philip Jakob Heubach in Lichte, Thuringia, in 1843. In 1938 the company was forced to close and file bankruptcy. During the late 1800's Gebruder Heubach made figurines and decorative objects from bisque porcelain, including his famous piano baby figures. The figures were posed laying, crawling or sitting; some more fully clothed than others; all exquisitely hand-painted with realistic expressions.
This adorable baby boy figurine, is smiling constantly while starring off into the distance. Sparkling blue eyes, blonde hair, feathered brows and closed mouth makes him irresistible. Seated in a playful pose with hands extending to his toes, he is dressed in an unbuttoned white and blue smock which is falling off his right shoulder. The figure measures 3" in height and 2 3/4" in length. Fully marked with the Heubach "Sunburst" mark, registered in 1882, and circular mark "Made in Germany". Near mint condition with no cracks, chips or repairs. Wonderful Heubach small-size piano baby.
