Our past ancestors, especially Victorian ladies, used egg and mushroom shaped darners to repair holes in socks as well as clothing and other housewares. The darner wold be used to ensure the mend was done neatly and comfortable to wear.

This fantastic wooden sock darner, circa 1900, is formed in the shape of a stately mushroom. The painted dome is a pinkish brown with gold gilt stem. Adorning the dome are two socks suspended from a clothesline by wooded clothespins. The mushroom measures 4 1/4" in height. Excellent vintage condition with no damage to the wood; shows mild scratches from years of mending use. A super darner and great piece of folk art decoration.
