Set of 4 Jean Pouyat (JPL) Limoges Hand Painted Salad/Dessert Plates w/Encrusted Gold Floral Decoration
Great factory decorated porcelain items are a thrill to have and enjoy. This fantastic set of 4 salad/dessert plates fit into that classification. The Pouyat family was one of the oldest French families connected with the Limoges porcelain industry. Jean Pouyat's grandfather had a faience factory in the 1760's.
This lovely set of 4 gently scalloped plates measure 8 1/4" across with a wide outer border of a deep royal blue, edged with a simple gold rim. The center motif consists of branches covered with encrusted gold and enamel floral mixed among brown and brushed gold leaves and stems. This leaf and brushed gold spills unto the outer border creating a beautiful effect. Two of the plates have reddish-orange enamel flowers, while the other two have pastel blue floral. Marked twice; first mark #3, under-glaze in green "JP over L" first registered in 1875 and used until 1890; the second mark #4, over-glaze decorating mark in red "Decor over JP over L" circa 1875-1890. In 1891 the country of origin was added. There are no cracks, chips or repairs. The colored enamel shows losses due to the fact it was extremely heavy and applied over a textured surface; really does not detract. Three of the plates have enameled inventory numbers from a previous owner on the base; no harm, just for your information. Have other matching pieces in my store.
