A loving tribute to a deceased family member. This wonderful Georgian mourning brooch, circa 1830, contains a display of carefully woven soft brown hair of the loved one protected under glass and enclosed in a decorative gold encasement (metal content not tested). The round rolled-edge brooch measures 1 inch across with the display of hair surrounded by a 5/16" border of delicate engraving with black enamel background and pleated inter and outer rim. Black enamel was used if the person had been married. The clasp has a simple "T" hinge and open "C" clasp. The condition is very good, with the hinge showing evidence of prior repair and some enamel loss on the face of the brooch. A beautiful brooch and tribute to the deceased individual.
