Sarreguemines, France, is the location of Utzschneider and Company, founded about 1800, producers of majolica, dinnerware, figurines and novelties. This wonderful majolica face jug, #3257, circa 1880 - 1900, is named "John Bull" and features a big man with a smiling face, ruddy completion and reddish-brown curly hair, bushy eyebrows and huge muttonchops . On his turned up collar is embossed his name "John Bull". Made in several sizes, this jug measures 6 1/2" in height and 7 1/2" from front to back. The base is stamped "Sarreguemines - M - 3257 -2 - 27 - 07. There is a 1/8" flake on the rim above his right eye; could be easily restored. There are no other cracks, chips or repairs. Light overall age-related crazing. Great face jug.
