Milk glass is the current collector's name for the milk-white opaque glass. Originally attempted in England during the 1700's, it was not commercially successful until the mid-1800's. Pieces produced during the 1870 - 1900 period are highly prized for their attention to detail. This very unusual playing card holder or box is from this collectible period. Shaped to hold one deck of playing cards this holder is embossed with scrolls and dots as it stands on four feet. Each side has embossed one of the suites, diamond, heart, spade and club. The holder measures 3 1/2" long, 1 3/4" wide and 3 1/4" high. There are no cracks, chips or repairs; the gold decoration shows minor wear and the floral decoration on the front is mostly gone. A very unusual find in early decorated milk glass.
