From the 1930's to the 1950's, another motivation for children to practice good dental hygiene was the decorative toothbrush holder. Most of the collectible toothbrush holders were made in prewar Japan and were modeled after popular comic, Disney and nursery rhyme characters. This extremely rare example, circa 1930, is the popular character "Popeye". Made of bisque, he is dressed in a colorful sailor suit with Popeye printed on his shirt. Details include his one eye open and tats on his arms. The right arm is movable and thus the holder was designed to hold only one toothbrush, through his curved left arm and rested on the bottom of his bell-bottom pants. He is marked "Made in Japan" on his back. Standing 4 3/4" tall this toothbrush holder is all the character Popeye has to offer. There are no cracks, chips or repairs. I think he originally had a wooden pipe in his mouth, but it is missing. Great find.
