Original 19th-century engraving of a Lion overlooking a mountain. Engraved by french engravor Charles-Michel Geoffroy (1819-1882). The mark of the engraver is visible on the bottom right side of the etching.

In order to give this piece this elegant yet antique appearance, we hired a professional to clean and restore the etching from any marks or signs of wear that could have appeared during the last 150+ years of its existence.
This results in a beautiful and refreshed appearance, that highlights the amazingly detailed work of the engraver.

To create the white margin visible around the etching, we used a technique called "chine-collé" to apply the fragile print on a more rigid surface. The highest quality of paper was used as support, which is completely acid-free with a soft white color that accentuates the contrast of the piece.

This work was entirely made by hand with a "burin", a steel-cutting tool used to carve a wooden or metal surface that later serves as a printing press to produce the etching. Only a very limited number of prints could have been produced using this technique, making it one of a few exemplars that exist in the world.
The engraving process is a very tedious task that usually took from 3 to 9 months of continuous work. Only a few masters were able to acquire a sufficient technique to engrave paintings to perfection.
