Rare Vintage Japan Lacquered Enamel Iron Red Tin Tea Canisters
Ca. 1920 ▪ Hallmarked ▪ Japan
A wonderful set of two metal tin ware tea canisters, or chazutsu, that retain their original inner lids, to protect the quality and aroma of fine tea. Date to 1910 - 1930. Both feature large hand-painted textured trees or branch in relief with inset abalone shell slices. One canister featuring a house structure amidst trees with sun above, and the other a large falcon with a menacing stare on a branch, all beautifully and skillfully detailed in brown and gold gilt on iron red enamel ground. The cylinders measure approximately 6 inches high x 4 1/4 inches diameter. And though they exhibit general wear related to normal use and age -- including paint chips, nicks and small dents, primarily around the lids -- they do present very well. Both are stamped MADE IN JAPAN to the underside. Photos are provided as additional descriptors.
