Celebrating 25 years of Antiquing Bliss
Antique John & Wm. Ridgway Cup & Saucer, Blue w/ Gilding, Georgian c 1825 - image 1 of 7

This elegant gadroon edged coffee cup and saucer is decorated with cobalt blue and hand painted gilding. It was made by John & William Ridgway, c. 1825.

The cup shape may be found on page 119, plate 713 of "Compendium of British Cups" by Michael Berthoud. It is also shown on page 190 of Godden's "Staffordshire Porcelain".

Berthoud describes the shape as "c.1825...gadroon edged cup...with high loop handle." His cup is pattern 2/1386 in red. This pattern has the hand-painted red pattern number 2/1497.

Condition? Only fair, but it displays nicely. The saucer has no chips, cracks, or repairs, but does have wear to the central decoration. It rings when tapped. The cup shows a fine hairline crack which I have magnified for you in the final photo. There is also evidence (by black-light) of restoration to the handle, which cannot be seen in natural light. There is no wear to the decoration. The cup does not ring when tapped.

Height of the cup at the handle is 3-3/4". The saucer's diameter is 5-3/4".
