Cheese cradles were designed with their distinctive curved shape in order to take a whole circular Stilton cheese on its side, so that wedge-shaped pieces could be cut from it. This style was popular from the late 18th C through the 1820's. I date this piece c. 1820.

The cradle is 13-1/4" long, 4-1/2" high, and 6-3/4" wide.
The condition is very good. There is wear and discoloration to the interior, which would be expected from the nature of its use. There are various nicks and scratches to the paint on the exterior, which I have shown in the photos. I have black-lighted the piece, and there is no evidence of re-painting.

It is signed on the base with the initials CB in a triangle. I have been unable to find any information on this maker or painter.
