This early 19th C porcelain tea cup and saucer has an interesting molded basket- weave design, plus pretty hand painted roses on both the inside and outside of the cup. The cup is 2-1/4" high, and the saucer's diameter is 5-1/2".
This cup type and shape is pictured in Michael Berthoud's book, "A Compendium of British Cups" on page 93. His heading for the page is "Grainger and Unidentified Embossed London Shapes c.1815-25" . This set dates c. 1820.
Although the saucer bears the handwritten pattern number 117, and the cup has a decorator's tally mark, there is no factory mark.
The set is in excellent condition. No chips, no cracks, no crazing, no discoloration, no repairs. Each piece rings when tapped.
