Attractive 19th C Pratt Pottery Plate, with a light pink ground surrounded by ochre borders. The pattern name "Skewbald Horse" is the one listed in the Transferware Collectors Club database.
The plate is signed, P. Wouvermann,Pinx,. The engraving was made by William French, English engraver, about 1850. It was taken from a painting called "The Hay Cart" by the Dutch painter Philips Wouvermann (various spellings of his last name). The hay cart is "cropped" from the engraving used to make the transfer on this plate.
The plate has a 7-1/4" diameter. It is in excellent condition. There are no chips, cracks, crazing, or repairs. It rings when tapped. There are a few light utensil marks which are not distracting.
The plate is unsigned, with no marks at all on the back. It is circa 1880 or earlier. It was made by F. & R. Pratt & Co., Fenton Potteries, Staffordshire, and uses their standard "123" pattern border.
