These beautiful cup and saucer sets have a soft grey ground, and 5 hand painted vignettes of ruins, cottages, churches, bridges, and scenery. There is lots of gilding. No two pieces are alike! This 8 piece set is excellent quality, and would have been quite expensive when new.
The pieces are marked only with their pattern number, 236, and not with the maker's name. John Beetwell of the London Ceramic Circle kindly identified the maker for me. The cups were made by G.F. Bowers, Brownhills, Staffordshire between 1843-1845. The shape was Registered in 1843. A photo of this distinctively shaped cup may be found on page 392 of "Staffordshire Porcelain" edited by Geoffrey Godden.
This group of 8 pieces is in excellent condition. There are no chips, no cracks, and no repairs. There is some slight wear to the interior gilding of one of the saucers. All pieces ring when tapped.
