This interesting teapot dates c1830. It has several unique features: the highly detailed flower finial, the finely modelled mask below the spout, plus a distinctive internal strainer.

This teapot form may be seen on page 298, plates 1785 and 1786, of "A Directory of British Teapots" by Berthoud and Maskell. The interior strainer is a round dome with the piercings having the typical HM& J arrangement: 12 in the outer circle, 9 in the inner circle, and 2 in the center.

I can see only two flaws. 1.) There is a shallow chip on the top edge of the spout. 2.) The cover, (which is in excellent condition) originally topped the matching sugar bowl. The tip-off is that it has no vent hole. The cover fits almost perfectly. Both Teapot and cover ring when tapped. The teapot is 6-1/2" high.

The base is marked with HM&J's pattern number 2/372 in green.
