This bowl was hand carved and burnished by the Ifugao people of the island of Luzon, Philippines. This type of bowl played an important role in everyday Ifugao life. Most people ate their rice out of a common bowl, but men of high status among the Ifugao eat from carved wooden bowls. The bowls are usually round and carved out of a cross section of a tree trunk. Ifugao wood bowls made with scalloped edges are called "Star Bowls".

The bowl is 9-1/2" by 3-1/4". A hole was drilled for a string to facilitate hanging it. There is an age-related shrinkage crack, which is stable.
