This is a gorgeous Spode "Japan Pattern" 9" plate. The central pattern is floral, and along the border are 3 vignettes of the cottages of the pattern's name.
The plate is in excellent condition. The gilding of the gadroon edge and throughout the pattern is remarkably intact. There are no chips, no cracks, and no repairs. The plate rings when tapped. There is wear to the red enamel on one of the 3 medallions.
The "Spode's Imperial" mark dates to 1821-33. It denotes an "improved" earthenware body. The pattern number, 4176, is hand painted in red. Vega Wilkinson dates this pattern 1826 in her book "Spode-Copeland-Spode".
I have 2 of these plates available. The price shown is for 1 plate.
