Fabulous Edo or Meiji Era Antique Japanese Pottery Incense Burner in the Form of a Crane. This is a rarely seen form for an incense burner. I have found 2 similar examples (in animal form) on the internet; each was in a museum.

The bird is beautifully modeled and hand painted. Be sure to note the anatomically correct feet folded up under the bird on the unglazed base. This technique is often seen in Japanese bronze art, but rarely in ceramics.

This piece is thinly potted earthenware, likely early Banko Ware. It measures about 6-7/8" (17.5 cm) long, and 4-7/8" (12.5 cm) long. The cover is missing. Other than that, the condition is excellent, with no cracks or repairs. There is a tiny chip on a tail feather, which can be seen in photo #7.
