This vibrant tureen was part of a John & William Ridgway dessert service. The molded tendrils distinguish it from the dinner service of the same pattern number. It is about 7-1/4" high, and the base about 7-1/4" wide. It dates c. 1825. This shape can be found on page 84 of Godden's "Ridgway Porcelains". It is usually called a "dessert tureen".

The cover with flower finial and the tureen with attached undertray are both in excellent condition. There are no chips, no cracks, no crazing and no repairs.

The pattern is Ridgway's #993. It is marked with that pattern number, and "IRONSTONE CHINA", one of the "anonymous" marks mentioned by Geoffrey Godden in his book "Godden's Guide to Ironstone", and identified by K. Church. K. Church, "J & W Ridgway - Anonymous Marks", Northern Ceramics Society Newsletter 107 (September 1997), 14-19
