This elegant trio was made by Davenport of Longport, Staffordshire between 1830-1850. The 3 piece set is hand painted with cobalt blue grape leaves, touches of yellow, and lots of gilding.
The tea cup is 3" high to the top of the high ring handle, with a 3/18" diameter. The coffee cup is about the same height, but with a 2-2/4" diameter. The saucer's diameter is 5". Both cups and saucer are in excellent condition. There are no chips, no cracks, no crazing, and no repairs. Each piece rings when tapped.
According to Geoffrey Godden, the brown mark on both pieces should date pre-1830, because after 1830 the mark used was blue. Despite this, the pattern number of 2556 would seem to indicate c.1850, according to John Twitchett, writing the Davenport chapter for "Staffordshire Porcelain".
Both cups and saucer are marked with Godden's #1191 in brown, and the pattern number 2556 hand painted in yellow-brown.
We have 2 of these sets available. The price listed is for one 3-piece trio. Also available here, 2 matching tea cup sets.
