This fabulous, huge Jug is in excellent condition. It is a Mason's Ironstone Hydra Jug, in the octagonal baluster form. The Chinoiserie pattern is called "Flying Bird". It dates c 1813-20.
It is about 11-1/4" (28.5 cm) high, and weighs about 5 pounds. There are no chips, no cracks, and no repairs. It rings when tapped.
The jug also has a rare mark...just "Mason's Ironstone China" without the word "Patent". I have read that some rare examples, particularly of pattern #1 (India Grasshopper), omit the word "Patent". I think it is interesting that this jug bears the pattern #2.
