What a beautiful teapot! It has cobalt blue bands decorated with heavily gilded foliage and leaves. It is in excellent condition. There are no cracks, no crazing, and no wear to the decoration. Both lid and pot ring when tapped. There is a tiny nick below the end of the spout which was possibly re-gilded at the factory, as it does not show up under black light. The base is marked with pattern number 702 in gilt.

I finally found this rare teapot shape on page 218, plate 1305 of "A Directory of British Teapots" by Berthoud and Maskell. Here is their description: " Spode, c1820, bone china, marked with pattern number 716 in gilt, a rare variant shorter version with high cape, concave lid with dimpled round finial, unusual handle set on below the shoulder, with moulded insulators and rivets, large oval domed strainer. Ht. 6 in (152mm)."

Although the pattern, #702, dates from 1804, its elegance and simplicity have it being used again on a c 1820 teapot shape.
