This pretty 19th C Porcelain Cream Covered Sugar Bowl was made by Joseph Machin, Burslem, Staffordshire between 1828 and 1830. The Dolphin handle is quite distinctive. It is 7-3/4" wide from handle to handle, and about 6" high.

The base is marked with the hand painted pattern number 769. This pattern is described as "A formal floral pattern in bright enamel colours. An Imari pattern with C-scrolls with large flowers in a vase in the centre." This from the book "Machin Porcelains & Earthenwares" by Thom & Miller, page 172. This shape of sugar box is shown on pages 37 and 64 of the same book, where it is noted that the shape is rare.

The sugar bowl and lid are in very good condition. There is a glaze crack in the lid interior which doesn't go through to the outside. This is a tiny chip on the interior lip of the bowl, not seen with the lid in place. There is some staining to the interior, and some "toning" to the dolphin tails; also an area of discoloration to the finial. The gilding is 98% intact. There is no crazing and no pattern wear. There are no repairs. Neither piece rings when tapped.

I have other Machin pieces available in this pattern: cups and saucers, creamer, and waste bowl.
