This pretty Etruscan shape cup and saucer set was made by Joseph Machin, Burslem, Staffordshire between 1828 and 1830. The Etruscan handle helps to date the set. The set is in pristine condition. There are no chips, no cracks, no crazing, and no repairs. Both pieces ring like a bell when tapped. They are very translucent.
Both pieces are marked with the hand painted pattern number 769. This pattern is described as "A formal floral pattern in bright enamel colours. An Imari pattern with C-scrolls with large flowers in a vase in the centre." This is from the book "Machin Porcelains & Earthenwares" by Thom & Miller, page 172.
I have 10 of these cups available, all in excellent condition. They were acquired as part of a partial tea set which included a sugar box, a creamer, and a waste bowl, all of which match shapes in the book mentioned above. This Etruscan cup and saucer is shown with the Dolphin Handled Shape creamer and sugar on page 64 in the book above.
