This 9-3/4" Mason's Patent Ironstone Plate is marked on the back: "PATENT; IRONSTONE CHINA WARRANTED" in blue print, and N1 in red script. According to my research, it is theorized that the name Mason's was removed from this mark, as the pattern was produced c. 1812-13, before the granting of the ironstone patent to Mason's in 1813. This mark is also shown on page 125 of Gaye Blake-Roberts book "Mason's The First Two Hundred Years".

Geoffrey Godden also recognized this as "Mason's pattern number 1". The Transferware Collectors Club database lists the maker of this pattern as Miles Mason. This pattern is also known as "Indian Grasshopper".

The plate is in very good condition. There are no chips, no cracks, and no repairs. It rings nicely when tapped. There is heavy utensil wear which can be seen in glancing light. There is a small spot of a glaze skip which is brown. The plate displays well. It weighs 1 lb., 5 oz.
