This striking and unusual French Rococo Revival vase is topped with two large mermaids peering down into its interior. Perhaps they are looking at the technical genius of the four porcelain supports needed to keep this elaborate vase from collapsing in the kiln. The center of each side of the body sports a ram's head in relief. All of the flowers are beautifully hand painted.
The condition is excellent. There are no chips, cracks, or repairs. There is some wear to gilding throughout, but especially the decoration below the mermaids' tails.
The vase is about 9-1/2" long, 7" wide, and 7-1/3" high. It weighs 4 pounds, 6 ounces. The vase possibly was supported by a pedestal, as the base is drilled. The base is marked "Vase Eliptique" and incised " A moup". I date this vase c 1830-1850.
