Celebrating 25 years of Antiquing Bliss
Antique Davenport Square Plates w/Handles, (Pair), Blue & Gold, 19th C English Porcelain - image 1 of 7

These elegant plates made by Davenport of Longport, Staffordshire between 1830-1850. They are hand painted with cobalt blue grape leaves, touches of yellow, and lots of gilding. They are about 10" x 9".

They are in excellent condition. There are no chips, no cracks, no crazing, no repairs, and no wear to the gilding. Both plates ring when tapped.

According to Geoffrey Godden, the brown mark on both pieces should date pre-1830, because after 1830 the mark used was blue. Despite this, the pattern number of 2556 would seem to indicate c.1850, according to John Twitchett, writing the Davenport chapter for "Staffordshire Porcelain".

Both plates are marked with Godden's mark #1191 in brown, (the "ribbon mark"), and the pattern number 2556 hand painted in yellow-brown. There are other matching pieces available in my shop: a teapot with stand, and a cup and saucer.

The price listed is for the pair of plates.
