This very decorative 8" plate was made by H & B (for Hautin & Boulanger) in Choisy-le-Roi, France. It is one of what was once a series of twelve, depicting a Western view of Chinese occupations. This plate is number 12, and is titled "Mandarin fumant.". The plate is hand painted in enamels over the black printed pattern.

It is in pristine condition. There are no chips, no cracks, no crazing, and no repairs. There are also no utensil marks, suggesting that it has always been used decoratively. The plate rings when tapped. There are 3 stilt marks on the back (done in the making).

The black printed mark on the back says: H & B MANUFACTURE DE PORCELAINE DE CHOISY. However, this plate is NOT porcelain, but tin-glazed earthenware (faience). The back is also impressed "5 K" within a circle. The plate dates from the 19th century: c. 1836 to perhaps c. 1850 when the mark on the back was used by its maker 'H & B de Choisy" .

Note: There are three more matching plates in this series available in my shop.
