Coalport AND the "Pattern Book Factory" .

This gorgeous tea set is a puzzlement. It is composed of a large teapot, a covered sucrier, and a cream jug, all hand painted in bright red- orange and with much gilding. The dolphin mask handle sucrier was definitely made by Thomas Rose, Coalport, c 1805-1810. (See page 83 of Messenger's "Coalport". He compares the John Rose sucrier to the sucrier of his brother Thomas, of Anstice, Horton & Rose.) The teapot, however, matches the example shown in Plate 842, page 141 of Berthoud's Directory of Teapots. It also has the 9-hole lozenge strainer mentioned there. That teapot is identified as "Pattern Book Factory". All 3 pieces were obviously decorated by the same hand.

All 3 pieces (and lids) are in excellent condition. All ring when tapped. There are no chips, no cracks, and no repairs. There is a little wear to the gilding on the creamer. None of the pieces are marked in any way.

In Geoffrey Godden's 1992 "Guide to English Porcelains" he says that ONLY hybrid hard-paste porcelain was produced at the Thomas Rose factory (Anstice, Horton & Rose). So, granting that the Thomas Rose sugar and creamer pieces are hybrid hard-paste, I can tell you that the teapot seems to be of an identical material.

The set will be shipped to you in 2 separate boxes. A matching is trio available.

Note: A Coalport (Anstice, Horton and Rose) sucrier of this shape was sold at the Bonham auction of 15 Nov 2017.
