This porcelain sugar box and cover was printed in a very dark blue in the pattern known as "Curly Pagodas" or "House Boat". The border pattern is called "Trellis Diaper". It dates c 1820.

Michael Messenger discusses and illustrates the pattern on page 65 of his "Coalport" book. He credits the first use of the pattern to Thomas Turner of the Caughley Works. This sugar box can also be seen on the terrific Transferware Collectors Club website.

The sugar box is about 4" high and 7" long. Although it displays well, it is in only fair condition. There are small, in-the-making firing cracks on each handle. There are two hairline cracks in the interior of the body which don't go through to the exterior. There is a large crack on the base which does go through to the interior. There is no damage to the cover or knop. The cover rings when tapped.

I have other pieces of this partial set bearing Coalport's distinctive impressed numeral "2". That mark was used c 1815-25. This sugar box is not marked. A matching plate is available in my Ruby Lane shop.
