This gorgeous bone china pedestal teapot has a low, round, melon-ribbed body. The cover has a very large decorative finial in the shape of a strawberry and strawberry leaves. It is about 11-1/4" long.

Although unsigned, this teapot shape is shown on plate 2042, page 341 of "An Anthology of British Teapots" by Miller & Berthoud. They call it a "distinctive shape" and identify it as Mason's bone china, c. 1835-40. It can also be seen on the web at the terrific Norfolk Museums & Archaeology Service website. They date it c. 1830, and identify it as by C.J. Mason.

The teapot is in very good condition. It has a slight nick on the edge of the spout, and a glazed over firing crack on the interior base which can also be seen on the base exterior. The teapot does hold water. There is some wear to the gilding around the pedestal base. I cannot explain the strange appearance of the bottom of the teapot. I have black-lighted the pieces, and there are no repairs.

The teapot cover and finial are in excellent condition, with no damage. Neither teapot nor cover rings when tapped.
