This attractive and very rare porcelain tea set is richly decorated in the Imari Japan style. In "Staffordshire Porcelain", speaking of Mayer & Newbold, Geoffrey Godden says: "No complete London-shape service is known to me, and to date no teapot." This set is currently the only one available on the internet!

The set was made in the popular "London Shape" about 1817. Although unmarked, it can be identified as Mayer & Newbold by comparing it to plate 1159 of the "Directory of Teapots" by Michael Berthoud and Richard Maskell. The shape matches, as does the unusual feature of a 13 hole strainer. Mayer & Newbold operated from Market Place, Lane End, Staffordshire c.1817-1833.

The creamer shape is shown on page 98, plate 586 of "A Cabinet of British Creamers" by Michael Berthoud. The creamer shape can also be seen on page 232 of "Staffordshire Porcelain", edited by Geoffrey Godden.

The set is in good condition. The teapot is about 10-1/2" long and 6" high. . There are interior chips to the mouth of the teapot (which aren't seen with the lid in place), and interior staining. The sugar also has an interior chip to the mouth (which can't be seen with the lid in place), and interior staining. The creamer has a small chip to the exterior lip, and has no staining.
