What a beautiful cup! This pattern was a first for Spode. Henry Daniel devised the raised gold process while working for Spode, and this pattern, number 3916, was the first made using the new process. (This according to Leonard Whiter in his book "Spode" on pages 181 & 182..) Mr. Whiter dates the pattern c 1822.

The bell-shaped cup with complex handle is decorated in green enamel and raised gold with birds on a basket of flowers. The interior has a wide fruiting vine border.

The condition is excellent. No chips, no cracks, no crazing, and no repairs. No wear to the gilding or design. The band of gold on the foot is intact...the light simply hit it wrong. You may notice a slight nick in the foot-rim: that was glazed and gilded over at the factory. I believe that with the huge expense of this new decorating process, this minor factory flaw was ignored.

The base is marked SPODE and 3916 in red.
