This bright and striking bone china coffee can & saucer set was made by Joseph Machin of Burslem, Staffordshire about 1810. According to the excellent Transferware Collectors Club database, the pattern has been called "The Proposal" by collectors because of the man kneeling in front of a woman. It is Machin pattern number 140. (There is another similar pattern, number 100, with slightly different colors.)

The can is about 2-3/4" high, with a 2-5/8" diameter. The very deep saucer's diameter is 5-3/8".

The saucer is in excellent condition. No chips, no cracks, no repairs. It rings like a bell when tapped.

The can has a slight ring, and no cracks or chips that I can find. There is a slight discoloration to a very small part of the interior of the ring handle. It fluoresces in black light, so must be a professional repair. I have taken a close-up of that small spot for you.

This well documented pattern can be seen on page 118 in the book "Machin Porcelains & Earthenwares" by Bill Thom and Philip Miller. It's on page 127 of Howard Davis' "Chinoiserie", and a photo of the can is plate 232, page 39 of "A Compendium of British Cups" by Michael Berthoud. He dates the can c. 1810.
