This pretty hand painted cup and saucer set is very big! The cup has a 3-1/2" diameter and the saucer's is 6-3/4". It dwarfs a regular tea cup set. Breakfast cups from the 19th century are scarce. They were special additions to tea sets, and were rarely available or ordered.

This set is hand painted with blue ribbons, pink flowers, and lots of gilding. The cup is molded near the bottom in arrow head shapes. The saucer is molded with leaf shapes. The handle is molded in a square bamboo shape.

Although the set is not signed, I have identified it as having been made by E.J.D. Bodley, c.1875. The same unusual molded cup and handle shape can be found in plate 1312 of Berthoud's "A Compendium of British Cups". This cup has the pattern number 675 hand painted in red on the base.

Each piece is in excellent condition with no cracks, no chips, and no repairs. Both cup and saucer ring like a bell when tapped.
