This cup and saucer set is as rare as it is beautiful. It is John Rose's pattern #793, which can be seen on page 84 of Michael Messenger's book "Coalport". He describes the pattern as "a design incorporating naturally coloured flowers within a deep cobalt blue ground embellished with gilt".

This set does not have the pattern number on the base, but I have had other matching pieces which did. The pattern can also be seen on page 239, plate 1434 of the "Directory of British Teapots" by Berthoud & Maskell. Both books date this pattern c. 1820.

Both pieces are in very good condition, with no chips, cracks, or repairs. There is wear to the gilding of the saucer (on the rim and inner circle). There is wear to the gilt decoration on the outside of the cup near the handle, and an "in-the-making" blue spot on the underside of the cup's outer rim. Both pieces ring when tapped.

The saucer's diameter is about 5-1/2" , the cup's is 2-5/8". Neither piece is marked. The cup and handle shape may be found in Berthoud's "An Anthology of British Cups", plate 367.
