Antique Papier-Mâché Double Inkstand, 2 Inkwells, Chinoiserie/Japonaiserie - image 1 of 7

This is a very unusual form of English or French Chinoiserie/Japonaiserie Papier-Mâché...a box containing 2 original glass inkwells, with an interior compartment for writing accessories, and a tray at the front of the box to hold the pen. It is well decorated on all exposed surfaces. It is c.1880.

Note: The glass inkwells sit flush against recesses in the lid. The inkwells never had individual stoppers.

It's 8-3/4" long, 3-1/2" deep, and 2-1/4" tall.

The condition is very good. All decoration is visible. There is normal wear to the surfaces, and various nicks and scuffs. The inkwells are unbroken, and intact. The hinges work well. There is a chip to the right side interior back near the hinge. The final close up photo shows this flaw.
