This attractive 19th C porcelain (bone china) sugar bowl with cover was made by John Ridgway of Cauldon Place, Hanley, Staffordshire about 1830-35. The design features an ornamental fence with large sprays of flowers against it. Six butterflies decorate the flanged shoulder. The flower finial is especially large and fine.

It is in excellent condition, with no faults. Any white spots you see are light reflections. Both pieces ring when tapped.

The bowl is about 8" wide from handle to handle, and about 6" high.

The base is marked with John Ridgway's pattern number 2/4278. This sugar matches a John Ridgway teapot I also have for sale here on Ruby Lane
The matching teapot shape can be found on page 278, plate 1667 of Berthoud & Maskell's "Directory of British Teapots".
