This attractive porcelain teapot has a molded handle and spout. The pattern features an ornamental fence with large sprays of flowers against it. Six butterflies decorate the flanged shoulder.

The teapot is about 11" long and 6-1/2" high. It is in good condition, with no chips, crazing, discoloration or repairs. There are three tight hairline cracks: one on the shoulder, and two on the spout. There is wear to the pattern on one side. I have taken close up photos of those flaws for you. There are no flaws to the lid, the finial, or the handle. Despite the hairlines, the teapot rings when tapped (as does the perfect lid).

The teapot displays beautifully, and likely could be used.

This teapot is Ridgway's "Devon" shape, according to Angela Grant of the Ridgway Pattern Book website. The shape also can be found on page 278, plate 1667 of Berthoud & Maskell's "Directory of British Teapots". This is their description: "John Ridgway, Cauldon Place, c1835, bone china, a shape rarely seen...with leaf molded spout junction, floral finial, ornate handle with moulded thumb rest, oval domed strainer."

The teapot they show is not marked. This one is marked with the John Ridgway pattern number 2/4278 handpainted in red. I date it 1830-35, based upon the shape and the pattern number.

Please note: I also have the matching sugar bowl (which is in excellent condition) for sale here in my Ruby Lane shop.
