This wonderful 10-1/4" dinner plate was designed by Wedgwood's Art Director Thomas Allen. It was one of the large "Ivanhoe" dinnerware series designed by him, and taken to the Paris Exhibition of 1878. The series is based on scenes and characters from the novel, "Ivanhoe", written by Sir Walter Scott in 1820. This one is: Front de Boeuf Extorting Silver from Isaac
The border includes six vignettes of Rebecca, Isaac, Rowena, Coeur de Lyon (King Richard), the Templar, and Wamba the Jester. The border also includes rabbit, duck, fish, chicken, turkey, and partridge. The series is a good example of the English Aesthetic Movement.
This plate is in a lovely dark flowing blue. It is impressed "WEDGWOOD", and has a date mark of BYH for 1905. There is also a blue printed mark: IVANHOE Etruria England.
The plate is in excellent condition. There are no chips no cracks, no crazing and no repairs. There are some utensil marks. The transfer of the
captions on this plate are difficult to read.
For those of you who don't know the "Ivanhoe" story (like me, I had to look it up)...Reginald Front de Boeuf was one of 3 Norman knights who captured and imprisoned Sir Cedric, Ivanhoe, Lady Rowena, Rebecca, and her father Isaac the Jew.
