This shape is often called a "punch" bowl, although it would be nice as a centerpiece on the dining table or sideboard. It is 9-7/8" in diameter and 4" high with a short foot rim.

To quote Geoffrey Godden, in his book "Godden's Guide to Mason's China (etc.)" : "Large size bowls are very often called "punch bowls" although they probably usually held fruit or served a purely decorative function". One of his illustrations is called a "punch, or sideboard bowl".

This 19th C bowl is in excellent condition. There are no cracks, no chips, no crazing, no wear to the pattern, and no repairs. It rings when tapped.

It was produced post 1860 during the Ashworth period of Mason's Ironstone. The pattern number (hand written in red) is B 4447. It was made c 1879.

In the book "Staffordshire Romantic Transfer Patterns" by Williams & Weber, this Ashworth pattern is shown on page 594, and called "Yin". Other names used by other companies for this popular pattern are: Chusan, Chili, and Colored Willow Pattern. I currently have a "Chusan" pattern plate for sale in my shop.
