This is a beautiful early English porcelain Tea Bowl & Saucer made by the Caughley (or Salopian) Works of Thomas Turner, c. 1780-1790. Each piece is marked with an "S" in underglaze blue. The saucer's diameter is 4-3/4" (12 cm). The tea bowl is 1-3/4" (4.5 cm) high.

The tea bowl is "Mother and Child" pattern. The saucer is "Bell Toy" pattern. According to the Caughley Society (UK) they are a set.

I found the following information regarding the 2 transferware patterns in a newsletter published by the Caughley Society (UK) : "Caughley never (as far as anyone knows) produced a tea bowl bearing the Bell Toy pattern The correct tea bowl to match a Bell Toy saucer is one bearing the Mother and Child pattern. Many collectors have been searching for years to find a Caughley tea bowl with the Bell Toy pattern and have passed up on the opportunity to complete their set with a Mother and Child bowl believing it not to be a match.".

Both pieces are in excellent condition, with no chips, no cracks, and no restorations. Both pieces ring when tapped. There is an "in the making" firing flaw inside the tea bowl, where a piece of frit has adhered.

Please also see the Worcester version of this pattern, and the other Caughley & Worcester porcelains which I currently have for sale here in my Ruby Lane shop.
