This design was popular in the late 1800s through the early Art Nouveau period of the 1900s. Typical delicate turn-of-the-century pendants set with pearls and a range of colored stones were worn because they were worn to their best advantage in the necklines of the period.

These designs were carried out on mass produced jewels. Pendants were generally light in weight and show a feminine arrangement of stones and pearls in a fine gold setting. Add a fine gold chain and the piece could show best when hanging just below the collar-bone. A loop allows for the chain and pieces such as this were most suitable for young ladies of the day. They were considered suitable for the fashion-conscious middle class and could imitate the more costly jewels worn in fashionable circles.

This fair size pendant/brooch weighs 6.5 grams and is marked 15K gold on the back. It is set with lovely natural seed pearls and an old cut amethyst approximately 1.25 Ct in the center and another amethyst hanging drop of a smaller size. It measures 2 inches in length including the bale and is 1 1/4 inch in width. An excellent pin and clasp make it suitable for wear as a brooch on a lapel or sweater.

It is in lovely antique condition. A wonderful summer and fall addition to your wardrobe.
