Cut steel jewelry played an important role in cheaper, secondary jewelry principally in the late 18th Century. Although diamonds ,which reflected candlelight, it was discovered that faceted steel could produce a similar and impressive effect at a far lower price.
It was discovered that tiny studs of steel cut in as many facets as possible were rivited to a plate of steel or some other durable metal. We can appreciate the time and detail that went into creating these gems. The fashion was widely accepted and worn in France. The finest pieces were produced in the 19th Century. The ornaments were popular because of the way they caught the light and were excellent substitutes and far less expensive than diamonds.
Tis outstanding pair of cut steel earrings is larger than those we have sold in the past. The design is lace-like and fills the three inch length and the 1 3/4 inch width. The weight is 28.8 grams. The lengthy wires were a later addition and are sterling silver.
As they swing from the movement of the head, they attract all the attention of onlookers. They are in very fine condition. Lucky the wearer!
