All the features associated with the period of mourning are beautifully expressed in this unusual mourning piece. The sentiment expressed is especially touching "Tis Thus She Was".
The piece is centered in a gilt yellow metal locket with rounded glass to both sides. It is hinged at the back allowing easy access inside. The frame has been tested and is not gold , but is possibly "Pinchbeck".
The front holds a sepia and polychrome mourning miniature featuring an urn, plumed hair and pillars sitting atop a crushed mother-of-pearl base. A rose plaque with the wording "Tis Thus She Was around a rose bud. The hair is well executed and is in excellent condition considering the age of the piece. The reverse holds a piece of fabric. There is a large bale which will hold a chain or a ribbon. We have added a chain in order to show the piece hanging for the photograph. It is not original to the piece.
It measures 2 inches in diameter and weighs 22.2 grams. We wi sh there was some hint of the memorialized person here, but have to use our imagination to create a story. Collectors will have to decide for themselves.
